[00:00:07] Speaker A: Welcome to a bonus edition of the Inside Scoop, Jerusalem, where today we are going to journey from Jerusalem to Malmo, Sweden for none other than, Drumroll, the Eurovision. If you haven't ever encountered the Eurovision Song contest, and if you're american, there's a good chance you haven't. It's a flamboyant, eccentric spectacle of music, show sequence feathers, scantily clad performers and eighties music. It's a several days long competition involving countries from Europe, plus the caucuses, Israel and Australia. In this episode, we are going to review all the songs entered into the Eurovision Song Contest. And when I say we, that is the reason I am calling this a special bonus episode. I am sharing the microphone with two of my three children. Actually, we were testing a new microphone and that's kind of how this all transpired. So Lucas and Raya were very eager to participate in testing the microphone, naturally, and then pontificating on the music. And my parents, John and Carol Schiavi, who were already on FaceTime, joined in from New York. So if you're from America, your first encounter with Eurovision will be cringe. If you live in a country that participates in the contest, you will likely get swept up in it. I rode the fence for most of my 20 years in Jerusalem. No, that's not true. Actually, I avoided it like the plague for a better part of my time here. And then in the last couple years, I finally capitulated, ceded my soul and my time to watching the israeli version of the song contest that produces its Eurovision representative. This year was no different. But it gets worse because as a journalist, I was then curious how the israeli representative, Edin Golan, who is an amazing singer, by the way, how she was going to be received considering the controversial israeli military action in Gaza and all of the protests going on all around the world. So I headed to YouTube where I proceeded to binge watch reaction video after reaction video to the israeli song and singer. I chalked up a mortifying number of hours watching these, but to my surprise, I didn't hear one negative review. They were all overwhelmingly positive. Now, in the midst of that, I stumbled upon this compilation video put out by Eurovision itself. And that's when we just got this mic. And so the testing began. So without further ado, this test turned special bonus ep episode, emphasis on the special the John Cecilion review of Eurovision with special guests Lucas and Raya, plus Carolyn, John Scavi from New York. All right, let's get right to it. The Inside Scoop Special edition, Jerusalem to Malmo. [00:03:32] Speaker B: Hello. Okay, Raya, you're fired. Okay. [00:03:37] Speaker C: Actually. [00:03:38] Speaker B: Welcome, everybody to the show tonight where we are going to surprise, surprise to my contestant judges Raya and Lucas. [00:03:51] Speaker C: Round of applause. [00:03:52] Speaker B: We and all the way from New York City, Mimi and gong. Gong. And we are going tonight. Now, we've done a couple of reaction videos to the Eurovision songs that are coming up. No side conversations. [00:04:12] Speaker C: Yeah. No. [00:04:12] Speaker B: Okay, pay attention because otherwise you're not gonna know what to do for the game. This is hunger games. If you don't play right, you die. [00:04:21] Speaker C: Mom, I never played. [00:04:23] Speaker B: Congregation Vicki no, and you better hope you don't. Okay, so listen, so the object of tonight's recording is a reaction we are going to. Now, we've reacted to the israeli song for the Eurovision. We've reacted to the England song disgrace. We actually had to stop it with like just about 1 minute into the England song and move on. Like run, run and go, like take a shower. It was that bad. And now what we are going to do is actually dun da da da. [00:05:00] Speaker C: Da da da da da da. [00:05:02] Speaker B: We are going to react to a snippet from every 37 songs that have been entered into Eurovision 2024, which is going to be in May. In May of this year. [00:05:18] Speaker C: Insane. We're going to have to. All of them. [00:05:19] Speaker B: This is going to be insane. There's no way we're getting through all of this. [00:05:22] Speaker C: There's some of the United Kingdom orders. Not here. [00:05:23] Speaker B: They're all here. All of them that have been entered are here. Just so you know, even when you burp. She burped. It gets picked up by this microphone. [00:05:35] Speaker C: You better hear what you said before. [00:05:37] Speaker B: We will when we play it back. [00:05:38] Speaker C: Yeah, hopefully. [00:05:39] Speaker B: There's no way we're getting through all of these. Nobody, because it's 940 and you have to go to bed. But we're gonna start because we're testing the microphone. Okay, is everybody ready here, Mimi, Ganga, can you see? But you don't see the computer. Okay, they don't see the computer so I don't know how they're gonna follow along. [00:06:01] Speaker C: Can you put the computer more close to us? [00:06:03] Speaker B: No. No. All right, I'm sorry. Mimi and gang Gong. You can't really react vowed, so stop. Maybe we can go like this. No, it doesn't help. You're gonna have to hold it for Mimi and gang Gong. Just like that. That's perfect. Hold it like that. All right. And Eurovision three freak show 2024. [00:06:29] Speaker C: Action. [00:06:32] Speaker B: Here we go. First country for me. [00:06:39] Speaker C: Albanian. [00:06:45] Speaker B: You know what? I just. Okay. [00:07:00] Speaker C: Well, honestly, for now, yeah, not that bad. Like the voice is pretty good. [00:07:06] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:07:07] Speaker C: Music video. Much better than the United kingdom. One after, say. [00:07:11] Speaker B: Oh, yeah. [00:07:11] Speaker C: Even that. We didn't watch yet, but we watched it before. If you cook, you could go check that one out. [00:07:16] Speaker B: Yeah, I actually like it. I think this sounds pretty nice so far. [00:07:20] Speaker C: Okay, Ryan, it was nice. And what the men were doing, though. [00:07:26] Speaker B: Oh, yeah. It was a little weird. No, listen, it was a little. You gotta look past it. But, guys, you're not gonna believe what's coming up now. [00:07:35] Speaker C: I'm Ed. And look, look. We were there. [00:07:38] Speaker B: Yes, we were there. [00:07:41] Speaker C: Do you remember? Yeah, we were in the hotel there. [00:07:44] Speaker B: This is silly, John. [00:07:45] Speaker C: We were in the hotel right there. Where were they? What was our apartment? No, I say it was a nice instrument, nice instrumental. But I think we had to hear her talking more, singing more. Because all I really heard was her maybe saying a few words and hearing the beat and instruments go on. But, yeah, the music video. I think this is the only normal music video we've really seen for now. And we've actually been there. [00:08:32] Speaker B: Although it was kind of a little weird. She was petting a chicken. She was holding a chicken. [00:08:36] Speaker C: You know, that's actually. [00:08:37] Speaker B: You should actually see the whole thing at some point. There's like the whole truck of pomegranates. Like, all the pomegranates fall out of the bottom of the truck and they all go rolling down the hill. [00:08:48] Speaker C: It's better than watching the other videos. Yeah, for now. [00:08:51] Speaker B: So, Raya. Armenia. What do you have to say? [00:08:53] Speaker C: It's fine. [00:08:54] Speaker B: It's fine. [00:08:55] Speaker C: Nothing else? [00:08:56] Speaker B: It was a bit weird, unfortunately. I would have liked to have seen more from Armenia, considering we want to root for them. But I don't think it's even gonna make the top ten. Yeah, I saw the whole video. It actually doesn't get much better. [00:09:11] Speaker C: Oh, God. Oh, God. Jesus. Is that the one you just did? [00:09:17] Speaker B: What is happening? Oh, my God. Oh, my God. Did they, like, run out of a budget? Did they have no money? [00:09:36] Speaker C: Oh, guys, if you look at the Australia music, like, you know, I didn't even focus. My ears. Couldn't focus on the actual sound. My eyes. I think I needed my. I think I need my ears. I needed my taste buds and I needed my eyes, all of those, to just focus on the music video. Because I think they ran out of a budget. So they didn't. Couldn't afford a shirt. I don't think they could have afforded a shirt that they didn't afford a shirt. [00:10:05] Speaker B: All I can say is Australia is not in Europe and should not be in Eurovision. That's it. Goodbye. Goodbye. Go back down under because that was my trust. [00:10:17] Speaker C: My ears got focused on. My ears were focused on the music video. That's how I know, I know my ears are. That's how crazy the music video was. [00:10:26] Speaker B: This is not gonna be good. Okay, go for. Which one is Austria? [00:10:29] Speaker C: Austria. [00:10:31] Speaker B: Oh, my God. [00:10:33] Speaker C: Cover your eyes. What's this, a movie? [00:10:35] Speaker B: Oh, my God. Okay, Austria. [00:10:38] Speaker C: Austria. [00:10:42] Speaker B: Austria is not kid friendly. This is porn. Austria is porn. That is disgusting. We flip through Austria. Bye bye. Next. Even worse. Look what's next. [00:10:57] Speaker C: What is this? [00:10:58] Speaker B: Yeah, yeah. [00:11:01] Speaker C: And we have to make blue noises. You know. You know, honestly, the music video was kind of normal. [00:11:25] Speaker B: It was normal. It was normal. Sorry, what's coming up? [00:11:30] Speaker C: Don't look. [00:11:30] Speaker B: Okay. Azerbaijan. I wanted to hear more of the music. It sounds like it's pretty good. Like it could be a really good song. The guy's voice seems good, but was soft. [00:11:40] Speaker C: Yeah. [00:11:40] Speaker B: Like I wanted to hear more. So maybe we'll watch the whole video now. [00:11:43] Speaker C: I don't know. So we didn't pause it in time. So we got like another second of the other thing and now it's one of the better. So let's do a country. [00:11:55] Speaker B: Belgium. [00:11:58] Speaker C: So we have a golden. Wait. [00:12:06] Speaker B: I'm sorry. The eighties called. They want their song back. [00:12:10] Speaker C: It's. It's like, wait, where's that song? How did it make it to the future? I got none. None of these. This one I don't. They lost the budget, too, but much more of a budget. He. This is a gold man. Oh, my God. Flicking his hair. Oh. [00:12:29] Speaker B: Oh, my God. [00:12:30] Speaker C: All right. Wait, what country is this? [00:12:32] Speaker B: No, that was. That was Belgium. That was Belgium. [00:12:35] Speaker C: Oh, that was Belgium. [00:12:35] Speaker B: Now we're in Croatia. [00:12:46] Speaker C: Baby lasagna. What's the name of the song? Oh, my gosh. Baby lasagna. [00:13:11] Speaker B: All right. [00:13:11] Speaker C: That's really baby lasagna. [00:13:13] Speaker B: Okay. [00:13:15] Speaker C: And the music video at the start looks kind of normal. So the guy was like. [00:13:20] Speaker B: It's like he's wearing like village clothes and suddenly it's all techno, but they're still wearing village clothes. I don't know what to do with him. [00:13:27] Speaker C: He's wearing clothes like normal clothes. That's why I'm thinking, oh, this will be good. I see him dancing in front of an old lady. He was dancing in the kitchen in front of the lady. I was trying to cook mini lasagna. [00:13:40] Speaker B: Cypress. Next. [00:13:41] Speaker C: How do you know, mom? I'm reading. It sounds. [00:14:00] Speaker B: I mean, she could be wearing more, but. [00:14:06] Speaker C: I love that outfit. [00:14:07] Speaker B: You're not wearing that. All right, maybe. [00:14:15] Speaker C: Okay, we need to stop on a different picture. So, honestly, the music. I don't really understand the lyrics, but it sounded pretty good. The music and the beat and. Yeah, the instruments. But the only thing was the music video. There could have been more clothes in the video. [00:14:33] Speaker B: Yeah, they could have been more closed. [00:14:34] Speaker C: Now, the music. They lost their budget, too. [00:14:36] Speaker B: They. Yeah, that's right. There. They all ran out of money. [00:14:40] Speaker C: You wouldn't give them enough. [00:14:42] Speaker B: So the song sounded like it was gonna be a good pop song. It'd be good for Eurovision. [00:14:48] Speaker C: It'll be good for hip hop. [00:14:50] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:14:50] Speaker C: Three, two, one. [00:14:52] Speaker B: Czech. Czech Republic. [00:14:58] Speaker C: I call is the name of the song. Well, you know, the words love me more? [00:15:26] Speaker B: Well, that is probably the name of the sentence. [00:15:28] Speaker C: The music video was better than other. And. [00:15:37] Speaker B: Like, you know, a little metal ish hard rock music, which is shocking in Eurovision if it's not a scandinavian nation. Wait till you see the Scandinavians. [00:15:45] Speaker C: How many of them? [00:15:46] Speaker B: We're not gonna see all them. We'll see, like, maybe we'll go to Israel. [00:15:50] Speaker C: Okay. [00:15:50] Speaker B: All right. I like this because it's going in an alphabetical order. [00:15:53] Speaker C: I think I like it. [00:15:55] Speaker B: Like you like it. [00:15:57] Speaker C: Yeah. Denmark. The name of the song is Saba. Saba. [00:16:04] Speaker B: Or is her name Saba in the sand? [00:16:06] Speaker C: Oh. [00:16:06] Speaker B: Oh, she has a voice. [00:16:07] Speaker C: What is the name of the song? [00:16:16] Speaker B: She's a nice voice. Sand. [00:16:24] Speaker C: Is this a music video? [00:16:25] Speaker B: Yeah, but it looks like it might have been their contest that where she won it. [00:16:31] Speaker C: Plus, the music video was. If this was the music video and whatever this music video, it was much more appropriate. And I think the lyric, the music was very good. This was the best one I've seen. [00:16:43] Speaker B: Okay. Riley's law is the best. [00:16:45] Speaker C: Leia, I guess you could say. [00:16:46] Speaker B: Yeah. Estonia. Estonia. Wow. [00:16:51] Speaker C: The name of the song is five minutes x. Pull up. Pull up. Yep, that's last. [00:17:03] Speaker B: There's some cool instruments in there, but you can't tell because there's a lot of distraction. [00:17:14] Speaker C: Wow. [00:17:16] Speaker B: Well, that's about all we're gonna see of Estonia because they won't be in the finals. Okay, next. [00:17:21] Speaker C: Yeah. I have no comments. No comment. Wait. Yeah, next. Finland. What is it? Wow. Windows. What did I tell you about Windows 95, man? What am I seeing? [00:17:37] Speaker B: I don't know what we're seeing. [00:17:39] Speaker C: Where's those flat? I know. I know what that shit is. It's a. [00:17:44] Speaker B: Does he even have a good voice? [00:17:46] Speaker C: It's the shirt, is there? [00:17:47] Speaker B: Why? [00:17:50] Speaker C: Yeah, I know, I know. I can't watch that. [00:17:52] Speaker B: Oh, my gosh. Well, it's over. All right. We're in France now. [00:17:58] Speaker C: France. Name of the song. [00:18:01] Speaker B: They don't sing a word in English, these guys. [00:18:02] Speaker C: Wait, is that the name? [00:18:04] Speaker B: Mona Mora is the name of the song. [00:18:05] Speaker C: Monya Mora means the love. My love. Same thing. What about Lisa? [00:18:11] Speaker B: Great voice. [00:18:13] Speaker C: He's spinning. [00:18:14] Speaker B: Wow. He's singing beautiful. Nice ballad. Wow. [00:18:21] Speaker C: Great. [00:18:22] Speaker B: Great. [00:18:22] Speaker C: Yeah. That's something you could call a good voice. [00:18:26] Speaker B: Nice ballad. Like, really showing off his voice. Emotional, powerful. No idea what he said because it's only in French. [00:18:35] Speaker C: My music video was normal. You know this music. [00:18:39] Speaker B: Are you sure? [00:18:39] Speaker C: Yeah. [00:18:40] Speaker B: All right, Georgia is next. [00:18:44] Speaker C: Georgia. The name of the song is fear fight. Firefighter. Firefighter. Oh. [00:18:52] Speaker B: Oh, my gosh. Listen to this. All right, get the melody. Firefighter. All right, now I am gonna interrupt this, and I am gonna play for you guys something. Go ahead. [00:19:16] Speaker C: Completely. Like, first it was a different type of beat, and then they just completely changed it. I know where you're gonna play already. [00:19:21] Speaker B: Now I'm gonna play something for you. You tell me if this is not an exact copy of this song. Of course. [00:19:28] Speaker C: Wait, which one's a copy of which? [00:19:30] Speaker B: Well, you'll. This is from years ago. This one. This is from 2018. [00:19:34] Speaker C: So they copied this. [00:19:35] Speaker B: Let's see. Tell me. You tell me. Come on. Come on. Let's get into the middle of it. Does it not sound the same? [00:19:58] Speaker C: Is this the plug? Was that the part? [00:20:06] Speaker B: Let's see. I feel like it was here. And I go to this one. Okay. Doesn't sound the same kind of. It sounds the same to me. [00:20:24] Speaker C: If you. [00:20:25] Speaker B: And she won, the fuego was. Where is she from? Cyprus. Yeah, Cyprus. She's the one who won or. No, wait. She came second to Netta, by the way. I think she came second to Netta. [00:20:39] Speaker C: What song did she have? [00:20:42] Speaker B: Toy. [00:20:42] Speaker C: Oh, toy. Stupid. [00:20:44] Speaker B: All right, so anyway, I think Georgia is a copy and trying to win. Like Cypress. [00:20:49] Speaker C: Look at that hair. You see that hair? That. [00:20:51] Speaker B: All right. [00:20:52] Speaker C: Germany. [00:20:53] Speaker B: Germany. [00:20:55] Speaker C: Always on the run. It kind of looks like a depressed emo guy. [00:21:02] Speaker B: Oh, I like it. [00:21:05] Speaker C: Yeah, he's depressed for sure. [00:21:07] Speaker B: He is depressed. But it makes for a good song. I like it. I don't love it, but it's. [00:21:15] Speaker C: It looks like other press. [00:21:16] Speaker B: It's better than others. [00:21:19] Speaker C: Is this next song? Oh, it's a Simpson. [00:21:21] Speaker B: Wow. [00:21:21] Speaker C: Yeah. I don't know what emo is. [00:21:24] Speaker B: How do you know what emo is? Next up, we're in Greece. [00:21:35] Speaker C: Sorry. It sounds more. Sounds more Spanish. Mexican. Spanish. Right. [00:21:46] Speaker B: Very strange. I don't like it. Don't love it. I don't love it. [00:21:57] Speaker C: Next we have Iceland. [00:21:59] Speaker B: Iceland, hold you. Brace yourselves. Brace yourselves for Iceland. [00:22:04] Speaker C: Go for it. I know what it is. Next one is Israel. Oh, my. Yeah, this was not in a studio. I don't know if this was in a studio. [00:22:21] Speaker B: No, it doesn't look like this. Looks like it was alive. Well, at least it's clean. Ireland. Oh, my gosh. [00:22:41] Speaker C: I'm not watching. [00:22:42] Speaker B: Oh, my God. [00:22:43] Speaker C: Okay, can I not watch? [00:22:44] Speaker B: No, don't watch it. Turn your heads away, demonic. Turn your heads away, lest. [00:22:48] Speaker C: Wait, what is it called? [00:22:49] Speaker B: Enter you bambi thug. Doomsday blue. Should we. Let's go to the end of Ireland and what. [00:22:58] Speaker C: See, I love it's new one. Israel. This is the best patrol to me, baby. Promise me you hold me again. Wait, what is the song called? Mom, can we do a bit more, please? No, no. Last one for sure. Oh. [00:23:35] Speaker B: Oh, it's all right. [00:23:38] Speaker C: No, can we just finish? [00:23:39] Speaker B: All right, Israel. [00:23:40] Speaker C: Go ahead, talk about Israel to me. I think Israel is the best. Not just because I'm from Israel, but it sounded. It sounded the best. And the music video was not bad. It sounds like the music was good. And this one looks like she's going. [00:23:55] Speaker B: This is just gonna be weird. [00:23:57] Speaker C: I'm not watching it. [00:23:58] Speaker B: Israel's song was. Sounds sophisticated and it sounds like other level. Like, not to be biased, but it does sound. Compared to what we heard so far, it sounds pretty other level. [00:24:09] Speaker C: Higher. [00:24:09] Speaker B: Like, bias means, like, just because I'm sitting in Israel, I feel like it's better. Not necessarily, but the voice, the music and the type of song. Yeah, yeah. Mom, what do you have to say? Yes, I liked it. The voice, the song of. And, like, the tempo. You know, the way it sounds. I mean, I don't know how to put it, but it's nice. I like it. Yeah, I like the tree of life. The tree of. In what? In the Israel one. Back of her head is the tree of life. [00:24:46] Speaker C: Yes. [00:24:46] Speaker B: It's hanging up. Yes. [00:24:47] Speaker C: The suspended tree. [00:24:49] Speaker B: Oh, wait, are you talking about that? Yes. Oh, that's Italy. It moved on to Italy. [00:24:54] Speaker C: Wait, so let's just watch Italy and end it. I think we should. [00:24:57] Speaker B: Oh, but look, look here in the Israel one. There's the tree. Oh, wait, where did. Hold on, I'll show you. See the tree? It's a suspended, upside down tree from the hurricane. All right, well, that's gonna be a wrap for this evening. We cannot do.
